How to Bond Someone Out of Duval County Jail

JACKSONVILLE • DUVAL COUNTY, FL

How to Bond Someone Out of Duval County Jail

If someone was arrested in Jacksonville, begin by confirming the booking and bond status through the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. JSO publishes separate instructions for cash bonds, surety bonds, inmate processing and first appearance.

The basic process

1

Confirm the booking

Use JSO’s official inmate-information search to make sure you have the correct person and current custody information.

2

Review every charge and bond amount

Check all listed charges and any separate hold or no-bond status. One bondable charge does not automatically mean the defendant can be released.

3

Choose cash bond or surety bond when available

JSO states that a full cash bond can be paid at the jail reception area using approved payment forms. JSO also states that a bonding agency may post a surety bond instead of a cash bond.

4

Allow time for release processing

JSO says intake and identification clearance must be completed before release consideration, and final release times can vary.

Important: If the defendant cannot post bond quickly, is arrested on a no-bond offense, or the charge requires judicial review, first appearance may determine whether release is allowed and what conditions apply.

Cash bond versus surety bond in Duval County

Cash bond

JSO says the full bond amount can be brought to the jail public reception area. Accepted forms listed by JSO include cash, certified or cashier’s check drawn on a local bank and subject to verification, or a U.S. Postal Money Order payable to the Office of the Sheriff.

Surety bond

JSO says a bonding agency must be contacted to initiate a surety bond, and the agency makes the arrangements for the individual’s release.

What happens at first appearance?

JSO says first appearance occurs within 24 hours of arrest for defendants who require judicial review. The judge determines probable cause, conditions of pretrial release and whether a monetary bond should be set. JSO lists first-appearance sessions at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in courtroom J-1 at the Pretrial Detention Facility.

Because the judge can change release conditions, the bond situation immediately after booking may not be the same after first appearance.
